Robot Claw

reverse engineering / manual mill

Our client came to us with a robot arm made of welded steel, which was frequently breaking and causing the arm joints to wear out prematurely.

Our goal was to prevent further wear of the joints by machining a new robot arm out of one piece of aluminum (a lighter material) and shortening the overall length of the arm.

We replicated the robot arm through reverse engineering to create CAD drawings. We used layout techniques to create geometry on the blank part to rough out the profiles and a manual mill to complete the project.

seal plate adaptor

custom cad design / lathe & milling machine

We designed and fabricated a seal plate adaptor to convert an outside mechanical seal to an inside seal.

Why did we do this?  We wanted to save our client money.

Inside seals are drastically less expensive, they do not require a seal filtration system, and replacing inside seals does not require any special tooling or precise measurement tools.

Preliminary measurements were taken on the pump, drawings drafted on CAD, and the part machined using lathe and milling machine.
